A pair of 20s lead the Retro Oldham Looper and Cumbrian Coaster railtour in 2009

This day-trip journey will pick up from stations in West Yorkshire and Cheshire before taking you along the scenic border route, ‘The Marches Line’, to Cardiff, arriving in the Welsh capital just before midday.

You will have around 5 hours to enjoy in Cardiff, a city with a wealth of cultural and historical sites. In 2011, the city was voted 6th in the National Geographic Traveller list, alongside the likes of Patagonia and the Azores.

The train will also continue onto Swansea, calling at Barry – a popular seaside resort for Cardiff residents and made famous by the BBC TV series Gavin & Stacey. You will have approximately 4 hours in Barry or just less than 2 hours in Swansea.

The train will return north in the evening, dropping off at stations as per the morning, after an enjoyable Welsh day excursion.

On-board Services

The train will consist of Standard, First and Premier Dining accommodation.

At Retro, we pride ourselves on the quality and value of our food and drink. Our famous "Real Ale" bar will again feature, serving hand-pumped ales from Greenfield Brewery as well as locally sourced hot & cold food. In addition a trolley service will be available in both First and Standard class.

Standard Class

These traditional, comfy British Rail coaches are ideal for a day out. Seating in standard class are arranged in bays of four, the majority with tables.

First Class

If you want a little extra luxury, First class is perfect. The coaches feature spacious, well padded seats, and will make your trip that bit more special!

Premier Dining

Our premium service – ideal for that special day out includes a First Class seat, breakfast and a 3-course evening meal. Also there will be an at-seat service providing complementary tea and coffee throughout the journey. We can be flexible with requirements for children, as well as most dietary needs. Train Information.

We have requested 2 x DRS Class 20 locomotives to haul this train throughout. The train will comprise of rolling stock provided by Riviera Trains Ltd.
